Going the
"Extra Mile"
Have
you ever met someone that you simply do not like? That’s behaviour
working. Most of us have learned a particular behavioural style
as we grew up. Many understand no other way of behaving, thus send
“turn off” messages to other behavioural styles.
Stephen
Covey had considerable insight when he wrote “Seek first to
understand and then to be understood.” Why is this important?
- 18%
of the population in the UK are people who are driven by resolving
problems. They speak quickly, have low attention spans and are
to detail what ballet dancers are to spot welding. They’re
no good at it! Many rise to the top of businesses and then wonder
why people don’t understand them. The reason is 82% are
different.
-
28% of the population are driven by people interactions; they
have to be with people to function. However being afraid of social
rejection makes them poor front line managers.
-
40% of the population are process people; they need goals and
boundaries in order to function. They fear loss of control and
go to great lengths to impose order and process on the world.
They make great project managers but if their process is not yours,
then they are blockers.
-
14% of the population live their working lives by procedures and
rules. They can be pedantic, producing work to high standards,
sometimes unnecessarily. Above all they fear criticism, they do
a good job (in their eyes to avoid being criticised). If their
rules are your rules than great, but if not… Beware!
So
what?
Well,
the “so what” is this. If your managers and sales people
don’t understand the basics of behavioural interactions, are
unable to recognise and adapt to the different styles, then they
can’t sell or manage as well as a top professional. The result
of knowing and understanding behaviour is superior performance,
the difference between being just OK, and being a star performer.
We
teach - and if necessary, coach - those who are the best of your
best to become even better by understanding behaviour and how to
utilise it to the advantage of themselves and your business.
