Behavioural
Job Description
What
is a Behavioural Job Description?
Every
job that requires human effort can be described in terms of the
behavioural demands that it
makes on the person carrying it out.
For
example, the behavioural demands that a Customer Service role makes
of the person doing it are that they should listen, be patient,
be empathetic, friendly, etc. Thisi is distinctly different
from the demands made of an Insurance Loss Adjuster, who should
follow the rules in place, be analytical, precise, detail conscious,
and detached. The Loss Adjuster wouldn't make a good Customer
Service agent, and vice versa.
The
Behavioural Job Description
is the result of a process which defines those behaviours which
are critical to the successful performance of the job. At
PS2 we use TTI's Work Environment Instrument to describe
the role in terms of DISC behavioural characteristics (see DISC
Theory).
Simply
put,
“If
the job could talk, what behavioural characteristics would it ask
for?”
The
challenge then is to match the behavioural style of the job to that
of the person doing the job. The closer the match, the better that
individual will be able to perform in the job. If the behaviour
of the person does not match the job, there will be tension between
the job and the person’s natural behaviour, which may affect longevity
and will affect work performance.
The
Work Environment
assessment provides information about the intensity of each of the
four behavioural factors D,I,S, and C as they relate to the job.

By
using the Success Insights Wheel® as shown below, we
can graphically display the behavioural requirements of the role,
together with those of the person being asked to perform the job.
Any likely mismatch is immediately and graphically highlighted.
